Irrigation Tips from a Pro!

Spring being Spring, the local Lake Gaston Gazette-Observer recently published its annual Spring Home & Garden supplement, featuring extensive advice from our own Robert Neville regarding irrigation systems.  Herewith a few of his tips:

Water supply: "For obvious reasons, [homeowners] will want to pump water from the lake, but unless they have an existing pump, they will need a permit from Dominion Power."  These permits are not hard to obtain and most homeowners can do this work themselves.  Dominion Power has some very helpful people to assist, and so beware any irrigation contractor who insists on excessive charges for obtaining permits.

Choosing the right system: "There is a vast difference in the kinds and qualities of irrigation systems, and a corresponding difference in price.  A good system should last 15 years with little to no trouble. Poorer systems might seem a bargain on installation, but when the problems start in year 3 or less, the homeowner will usually wish they had been more selective."

On references: "Homeowners should always ask for references ... The design and installation expertise of the installer is as important as the system [a homeowner] buys, and reputable irrigation contractors should have no shortage of previous customers willing to vouch for their work"

On licenses: "[The homeowner] should always verify that the irrigation installer is fully licensed... Except for smaller systems, a license is required under North Carolina law."

I'm so glad that I'm learning from a pro! We are looking into our irrigation. Hopefully we can get this installed before the ground gets too hard this fall!
